Highway 11 East


Relatively straight and flat, through boreal forest. Watch for moose in early morning and evening and overnight. Hills and windy areas appear as the highway turns south at Beardmore along Lake Nipigon. Cell services is limited to Rogers system users/partners with some Bell service areas.

Highway 11 East  includes towns along the northern Transcanada route. Through Cochrane, Kapuskasing, Hearst and into Greenstone. Greenstone stretches the entire mapped area along highway 11 East. Greenstone is an amalgamation of several towns which include (From east to west); Caramat, Long Lac, Geraldton, Nakina, Jellicoe, Beardmore, Macdiarmid and Orient Bay on Lake Nipigon. In total Greenstone covers an area of 2700 square km (1050 square miles).

Highway 17 East

Highway 11 East follows the rugged shore of Lake Superior through. Windy and hilly in places, this route makes for some stunning vistas especially from Marathon to Nipigon where the highway is very close to the coast. Bears, Moose and Deer can be a hazard in the early morning, evening and overnight.

Sunlight in the morning (if headed east) and in the evening (if headed west) can be a hazard due to the hilly/windy roads.

Cell service is limited to Rogers system users/partners with some Bell service areas.

Highway 17 East includes towns along the southern Transcanada route from Wawa to Nipigon. Through White River to Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Rossport and on to Nipigon.

Highway 11/17 

Highway 11/17 starts at Nipigon/Lake Helen where Highway 11 and Highway 17 merge right before the Nipigon Suspension Bridge. The highway follows the shore of Lake Superior through some windy sections. This highway is currently being twinned from Nipigon to Thunderbay. Bears, Moose and Deer can be a hazard in the early morning, evening and overnight.

Cell service is limited to Rogers system users/partners with some Bell service areas.

Highway 11/17 includes towns of Nipigon, Lake Helen, Red Rock, Dorion/Hurkett as well as Pass Lake, beyond which you are into Thunderbay, the regional hub/population centre.
